There are a bunch of niche communities from reddit I miss. I wouldn’t mind starting some of them, but I can’t be spending hours a day dealing with petty bullshit and weird tech stuff.
I almost exclusively used reddit from my phone, and I expect that whether I settle on Lemmy or Kbin (I have accounts on both, trying to figure out if there is a meaningful difference), I will also be mostly mobile-based, if that is helpful.
I never modded a subreddit, so I have no basis for comparison of workload.
Some of the subreddits I miss are /r/geology, /r/geologygifs, /r/phish, /r/kgatlw, /r/boston, /r/baseball, /r/redsox, /r/mapporn, /r/manholeporn, /r/printmaking, and /r/burningman.
So if I start some communities (or magazines, I guess?) over here, how much work am I signing myself up for? Like, if I signed myself up to start 4-5 of these in the hopes that they would become functional communities, would I hate myself in a year?
Not much work right now at all. Just put some rules on the sidebar and most people will listen.
You do need to have a bunch of content ready though, to post over a couple weeks and crosspost to other comms to get the word out.
Unless you happen to hit one of the jackpots that instantly falls ass backwards into thousands of subscribers, it will require almost no work in terms of active moderation at first.
The real work is going to be in doing enough initial content seeding and chatting to get people interested enough in your communities to subscribe. Creating a community is incredibly easy, but actually STARTING one is hard.
It needs to be about a topic where you can post something fairly regularly. At least once a day. You yourself will need to make sure to go out of your way to make your communities feel welcoming and engaging, because you are trying to set up a space where people find comfort and entertainment and until you have enough subscribers for them to chat amongst themselves and stay entertained, that means you’re playing host.
Thanks. Hadn’t really considered the playing host aspect. Maybe I’ll start with just one.

Good news about mapporn! I might take a stab at moderating some of the others, just to get them going.
Like…a nothing amount of work right now. There are not enough users to commercially target with anything. We are too new even for the amount here. If you need to do anything, you’re probably doing too much. I haven’t see anything worth talking about.
