    LMFAO!

The developers of the Winamp media player said this is exactly why they never made a Winamp version 4, they didn’t want people downloading Winamp four skins hahaha!

Good thinking ahead on their part at the time when Winamp 5 came out 👍

Supposedly the reason Windows went from Windows 8 straight to 10 was that a lot of software checks whether the system is running Windows 95 or 98 by looking for a version starting with 9 … So Windows 9 would have resulted in some software trying to install itself in a manner compatible with a very different version of the OS.

That’s actually very incorrect, but almost sounds plausible on paper.

Nope, Windows 95 was identified as version 4.0, Windows 98 as 4.1, Windows 2000 as version 5.0, XP as 5.1, and 2003 as 5.2…

Not to even count the DOS versioning numbers…

M$ got rather dumb with their versioning numbers.

The reason Windows 9 never became a thing was due to the German language, where 9 pronounces as ‘nein’ in German, which basically means ‘no’.

That’s why I started with “supposedly”!

Though I’m not convinced I find your explanation any more feasible, TBH. Not the stuff about the versioning, that seems realistic, but the stuff about “Windows No” being the reasoning.

Coming from Dave Plummer, the M$ developer of the original Task Manager…

Also, try the WINVER command in Windows 95 and 98, the original Windows 95 is version 4.0.950, Windows 98SE returns Windows 4.1.2222

All right, fair enough. I have been out of the Windows ecosystem for years, but that guy has lots of interesting stories and presumably has cause to know the truth of them.
