Adding less-than-lethal alternatives:

A magazine-fed (for reliability) paintball gun can be loaded with pepper spray and hard plastic rounds. An example of a good value is the Tippman Stormer at $125. This should be paired with a 90g CO2 cartridge because a 12g won’t even allow one full mag dump. It’s also nice, but certainly not required, to have a HPA tank for practice.

Bear mace because its got the best range. If using it always expect to also mace yourself. All gel-based mace sucks: You won’t mace yourself with gel but also won’t disable the attacker.

Firearm safety, especially pistols, can be learned and practiced with an airsoft replica. Many have the exact weight and function of a real firearm as well as roughly a third of the recoil of a typical 9mm.
