BioNTech is definitely not defunded in China. Besides BioNTech, there are more local pharmas working on mRNA. BioNTech have a license / working agreement with BMS worth 2 billion dollars mainly for a mRNA cancer vaccine. Mostly handled in China - again. Because in the US as a scientist you’ll be defunded if you use the word mRNA in your documentation.
It is generally fucking nuts to block what could be one of the major cancer treatments of the near future.
China has no social credit score like the western media have you believe. The US has indeed a social credit score, designed to keep the majority of the population poor.

Besides drug approval, which is not a measurement in itself, I can attest to this. A large German pharma, has increased their head count from 7 to 40 within a year. They bought a local pharma for 1 billion US dollar and at the same time closed a US facility. The same goes for many other pharmas. You can say what you want about China, but they are investing heavily in science. Because they believe in science. Unlike the current regime of the US.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's a gadget or appliance that you purchased that you would wholeheartedly recommend to others?
2·7 days agoFew things. One is a home vacuum seal machine. I can keep food for much longer. Just vacuum seal it. Never thought I would ever use it that much. Secondly our Chinese toilet with inbuilt massage shower head to wash my ass. Most people refer to it as a Japanese toilet. The cleanliness feeling after it hits the stream right on target, is just the best. These unfortunate underpaid people can burn down all the toiletpaper warehouses in the world.

Technology•The Free Market Lie: Why Switzerland Has 25 Gbit Internet and America Doesn'tEnglish
12·7 days agoMaybe you live in a 4rd level city, but here in Shanghai, the speed is fenomal. I download a 4k atmos movie in mere seconds. And outside because most of the city is covered by 5GA, it’s crazy fast. Whenever I go back to Europe, I struggle with both the fixed line speed and whatever they claim is 5G.

Such BS about privacy payoff. Do you know what your banks and venmo know about you? Your chip in your phone or credit card, allows companies to target ads in real time. That’s the reality in the US but conveniently ignored because China has to be bastion of privacy violation. In reality China has privacy laws comparable to the European GDPR.
AliPay and wechat are fenomal. It’s like in the western world, 1000 apps rolled into one. Paying, ordering food, ordering DiDi, trains, flights, insurance, sports, tickets all in the one app. Plus you can add mini apps within so when you go to a restaurant you can scan the QR code or just put your phone on the NFC tag, and the menu pops up so you can order and pay directly.
China is much better in regards to infrastructure like high speed trains, social security, health care, green energy but again because of the western propaganda this is ignored. Are there tradeoffs? Yes of course.
But from someone who lived and worked in the US for 2 years and now lives in China for over 7 years, I can 100% claim my life is much better here than in the US. And definitely much, much more affordable which is what the article is about.
