    This picture doesn’t convey how much of a black pill ending this is.

    It’s a kafkaesque hell movie about poverty and desperation. Like hitting this title card after you finally see him break, goddamn. Like you keep just hoping that there’ll be some speck of light, I dunno, even just a seen at the end of him bathing in the light of Jesus in a way that a lot of those old films with hopelessly bleak endings do… but no. He becomes what he hates, his son watches on.

    I imagine there’s a remake or reinterpretation - a car instead of a bicycle would still work today.

      About a remake: Why even talk about it? I believe good films don’t need remakes. This is one of them.
