When did it become unacceptable for white actors to play characters of different races (e.g, black face, yellow face, etc)?

They can still be a dude playing a dude, disguised as another dude.

        Me?

        I know who I am

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKvqhlhXq9s

        Quick edit:

But I feel like this is the most recent example of a white actor using black face in a manner that wasn’t exactly problematic.

Because as the quote says, it’s not him doing it. It’s the character he’s playing doing it.

Which is an important distinction, and answers a question that probably wasn’t serious to begin with

The Yuri Wong song built off the sample of the quote.

If you listen later and enjoy it, he also uploads a video of making each song. It’s pretty cool shit.

Unacceptable to who? (Or “unacceptable to whom?” if you’re even more pedantic than… I.)

Here’s a clip from a three-decade old movie showing a clip from a movie that was itself already three-decades old.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbiymQJsC8M

(Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, Bruce Lee’s reaction as he and Linda watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s.)

It was pretty shitty behaviour then and now. The change is just whether people not directly targeted by it realized it, or faced consequences for it.

I think watching the documentary Ethnic Notions is really useful in understanding why blackface is uniquely messed up, and was invented as a tool of oppression.
