N.Y. Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to sign a bill that bans anonymous complaints to the state child abuse hotline. The law would still maintain the confidentiality of callers.

The change comes in the wake of a 2023 ProPublica investigation that showed how the hotline had been weaponized by people endlessly calling in baseless allegations against exes or rivals.

Man this is a tough one. I don’t know. Yeah you want to make sure you stop abuse and fraudulent calls. Yet on the other hand there’s no way this won’t cause real complaints to be held back. Also nobody in their right Minds believe it’ll be confidential. Nobody should have any faith in the government maintaining confidentiality in this kind of thing. Every day there’s another story of confidential systems being illegally shared between departments and branches of government. What I’m supposed to believe politicians like Cuomo and his ilk would honor those rules?
