The two longest shutdowns in U.S. history were both under Republican’s watch while they held both the House and Senate. And surprise, surprise…both under Trump.

    Republicans can’t govern y’all.

It’s the best and most beautiful shutdown ever, nobody could do it so magnificent except for perhaps Lincoln, but he didn’t do it.

Do the Epstein Files have anything to do with it? Besides the premium talks, I thought that one Arizona rep will give the final vote to release them, no?

      Seems so:

The petition’s final two signatures were to come from Democrats: James Walkinshaw after he won the Virginia 11th District special election on September 9[159] and Adelita Grijalva (expected) after she won the Arizona 7th congressional district special election on September 23.[160] Though Walkinshaw was sworn in the day after the election, Grijalva was treated differently. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he would wait until the state certified her victory.[161] He then canceled the House sessions for the last two days of September while facing an impending government shutdown[162] and said he would not call the House back into session until the government was operating again.[163][164] On October 14, the Arizona Secretary of State certified the election result.[165] On October 21, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes sued Johnson, seeking to force him to swear in Grijalva.[166] That day, Johnson told Fox Business that the delay “has zero to do with Epstein”, given that “the Epstein files are being released. There’s 43,000 pages now out there”.[167] That number apparently referred mainly to the House Oversight Committee’s releases on September 2 and October 17.

Kinda running out the clock until midterms turn the house blue

Kind of like when McConnell ran into the clock on the Supreme Court appointee

It is amazing to me that Maga thinks the shut down benefits them

This isn’t strategy, it’s cruelty and corruption. They don’t want to feed poor people, and they also want to give more of our money to their insurance company CEO buddies.

things aren’t getting funded but ppl are expected to do their job. Examples like airport and food inspections are running poorly. Plus to make matters worse president keeps saying he wont give back pay.

Wow this is even worse than I thought. Are people in these jobs unable to strike as well? Is there a meaningful difference between this and indentured servitude?

For air traffic control I believe its illegal to strike or something.

I asked the question why dont they quit till getting paid. Apparently its an issue with restarting benefits basically.

There are MANY, MANY layers of government in the US. Where I live, we have: cities - townships - counties - states - federal. Each of which draw taxes and fund workers and projects.

Every single one has a current budget aside from the federal level. So most day to day, local work is getting done. It’s the broader federal work that’s unfunded right now.

So roads are getting fixed, but NASA projects are unfunded. Local fire departments are getting paid, but federal food assistance is not.

If we have a hurricane, then the federal emergency management agency won’t have a budget to manage it (but they’re pretty dismantled already)

I hope I’m wrong, but I expect the strategy to be for Republicans to wait until health insurance open enrollment is over in January, so people are either locked into price increases of 90% or have no insurance at all going through next year.

I think both parties were waiting to see how the elections go. I suspect shutdown talks will make more progress depending on how the elections went… And they didn’t go well for Republicans.

republicans almost never win when they create disasters like these, while still in control. they usually put it off til the dems are in power to do this.
