I’m under 37 and also scratching my (European) head. Is this one of those insane US things?
I used to see them in the UK. Perhaps they’re making the boxes stronger to save needing the plastic, or maybe it’s just smaller pizzas/boxes don’t need them.
Depending on the chain they still come on some pizzas our side of the ocean.
Not a US thing.
Unfortunately, they’re just cutting cost. My recently ordered pizza was ripped off and stuck to the box. Had to scrape it off .

One of the worst features is that it’s a piece of plastic instead of the little ball of dough that they used to put on top of pizzas for the same purpose.

I haven’t had a pizza with a little table in ages. Maybe I’m not getting pizza from the right places, but even the local chain I get pizza from doesn’t use them on their extra larges.
A while ago we (humans) learnt how to actually make boxes so the tables aren’t necessary anymore
Even longer before that, we used to have a ball of dough on the pizza to keep the pizza from touching the box.
So that’s what happened? How did we do that?
