Oh man do I ever with you. I’m absolutely an idealist, I agree with the OP’s sentiment. But I will absolutely support anyone with any ideology that gets us closer. Small steps are easier to take, this bullshit that everyone thinks we need the perfect candidate with the one weird trick.

See what that got us. I have no goddamned idea where to go from here. I’ll support any ham sandwich that drags us in the right direction.

I’m in the same boat. I love that it makes self hosting easier for me. It does what I need and even gives me a small extra measure of security. I admit, I use it because I’m lazy, I could do it without Cloudflare and do for some services. So, I figure if it truly becomes urgent or intolerable I can drop it from the stack.

One of my family members got into the “blue-green algae” fad (about 5 years after it fell out of mainstream). It was too expensive so they bought the horse algae from veterinarian supply. He said it was exactly the same, as long as you could put up with the grit.

These people exist (and I’m related to them).

I’m with you. I mean, its probably the bubble I live in, but I’m so tired of trying to talk to my friends and family about all of this but I’m dismissed as being paranoid or they tell me that Biden was just as bad or frankly most often just some dismissive joke in response.

I’m guessing about as many people care about this as there are who support all of it. The remaining 40-50% is just checked out and thinks this is just politics as usual. That’s my impression anyway.

  • which is a nonconformist

Thank you for this, it puts it in terms that make a lot of sense. This really helps explain a phenomenon I see so often. I know a few folks who are certainly not pro-trump, but are very anti-political. I’ve been told that I need to shut up, and things would be fine once the next election rolls around.

These folks might not like what’s happening, but they are fine conforming to it.

Maybe it’s a me problem, but I think it’s going to take a little more work than the bare minimum.

Nah, I mean that even thought they look so picture perfect, my brain just doesn’t see them as real, and parks them in the same category as a cartoon.

Whereas a practical effect, might look hilariously bad, but sometime a jello filled, papier-mache head exploding, is the perfect amount of gore to make me wince.

My theory is that since practical effects ultimately rely on physics of the world we occupy, that despite their unpolished look, they feel more real. The hyper realistic, but completely reality breaking effects of today just hit the same way cartoons do.

Speaking of cartoons, I love finding the shortcuts that animators would take, there’s something so artistic about how they did it.

I am just so much more engaged when I can watch a movie while also trying to figure out how they pulled off an effect.

  • I’ve never thought about it like that but it makes so much sense. The hate in the heart of these people runs incredibly deep, I know because my own family has disowned me because I refused to “take the red pill”.

I am a leader in a youth organization and we have a few autistic kids in our group. They are wonderful kids, and their parents are just amazing with their patience and love for all the kids. I can’t imagine the difficulties they face, but I’m so truly blessed and happy to have these kids in my and my children’s lives. I’ve worked with special needs kids a few times, and the pure joy they are capable of is something that sticks with you.

But I’ve also known a few less involved and less interested parents who denied and refused care for their kids who clearly need help. I can’t say I know the political persuasion of any of these folks, but I’m pretty good at inference…
