Funny how contemporary the past is when you study it from the point of view of ordinary folks who lived back then - as opposed to the glorious and grandiose stories of leaders, conquerors and nation builders you learn everything you never wanted to know about at school.
That’s the beauty of living history and accounts of everyday life such as the one you’ve posted. Those are much more interesting to me than the “official” history.

I used to hunt for those mushrooms as a kid. I’d go out late in the morning in the fields closest to our house, pick the whitest of them, come back home quickly and my Mom would cook then for lunch. Enjoying those mushrooms was literally all about timing. That’s how quickly they spoil.

You know, as a younger man priding myself in having a fair and balanced political opinion based on facts and logic, I used to think that if people can strike it rich, it’s okay as long as they don’t ruin the lives of others doing so.
Not anymore. As I aged, I realized the motherfuckers were either born rich, or became rich on the backs of others - and more often than not, both.
I still have nothing against honest rich men. But what that means is, close to retirement in 2025, I increasingly want all rich men dead.
Because the truth is, in our society, there is no honest rich man. If you’re rich today, somebody else is struggling in life so you can have it good. That’s just how it is today.
I only use GitHub as a dumb git repo for my GPL- and MIT-licensed projects - and as a place for others to report issues on my projects - and I never see any AI.
If you don’t use GitHub’s proprietary features for projects that you give away anyway, you end up mooching off of Microsoft’s resources and they don’t get any of the benefits of locking you in, stealing your code (since it’s public to begin with), putting you under heavy corporate surveillance and ramming their AI shit down your throat in return.
That’s kind of why I host my projects on GitHub, despite my everlasting hatred of everything Microsoft: I get to waste their resources and they don’t have a leg up on me.
