Grabtharto Toronto@lemmy.ca•Boy, 12, and man charged after unhoused man killed in unprovoked attack, Toronto police say3·18 days agoYeah, this one is pretty sickening. I think it more likely that this guy would have died without medical attention than as a direct result of treatment, but that’s probably not relevant to the charge anyway. The victim probably died from his wounds, but it sounds more like the idiots who did it intended to rough him up for fun. They had hammers and didn’t aim to cave the guy’s skull in. Evidently the hospital didn’t think it was that serious either, but damn, any serious beating has the potential for this. It would be like popping someone in a bar fight. Even if you were looking for trouble, it’s pretty unlikely you meant to kill someone with a punch to the ribs, but it does happen. So they’ll get murder, just not premeditated murder. Hopefully they weigh the brutality of the attack, and the intentional targetting of the homeless victims and put the adult away for a good long time. 12 year old isn’t even old enough to fall under the YOA, but might get tried that way anyway depending on circumstances. Just sad all around here.
Grabtharto Toronto@lemmy.ca•Boy, 12, and man charged after unhoused man killed in unprovoked attack, Toronto police say8·18 days agoBecause it’s hard to prove you beat someone with the intent of killing them when they didn’t die, but rather went to the hospital, were treated, and were subsequently released. Also going to be tougher because the hospital’s role in this is going to be rightfully questioned as well. He may be dead because of negligence.
Grabtharto Canada@lemmy.ca•Carney says new Major Projects Office will help build a “Canadian sovereign cloud” | BetaKit3·21 days agoYou could ask him, bit it sounds to me like he’s not happy about how long it took them to get to this point. He’s right that the government caused generational harm to its citizenry with their oblivious decision making. The best time to set this up was before moving our information into public space. That doesn’t mean the next best time isn’t immediately.
Grabtharto Canada@lemmy.ca•Carney says new Major Projects Office will help build a “Canadian sovereign cloud” | BetaKit4·22 days agoMaybe he means it’s like closing the barn door after the horses have bolted. The government already put all the personal data they have on most people into the cloud years ago.
Grabtharto politics •'Not medically well': Trump's health questioned after his face seen drooping at 9/11 event3·22 days agoOh I am well aware, but recall that according to the rules, Obama should have had his supreme court pick. Doesn’t matter if the rules say he would be president if everyone including Vance himself feels he is illegitimate because that’s all they ever hear. Might even provoke him into an election after a year of badgering him at ever possible opportunity. Hearts and Minds is a game, and right now only one side is playing.
Grabtharto politics •'Not medically well': Trump's health questioned after his face seen drooping at 9/11 event3·22 days agoHonestly, if Vance assumes control and your democrats aren’t screaming all day and all night about this unelected and illegitimate president for as long as it takes to get an election, then they really haven’t learned anything about the way the game has been played for the last couple decades.
Grabtharto Canada@lemmy.ca•2 more Toronto speed cameras cut down, as Ford urges city to do away with 'tax grab'4·24 days agoIn Ontario, they are in fixed places and signage is required ahead of their position. Heck, they are on google maps. Unless you are driving on an empty road, you will know where they are when suddenly everyone slows down, then speeds up again about 20 seconds later. Quebec, on the other hand, is more like Calgary. They do have signs as well, but they move the little vans around. They are pretty conspicuous though, so easy to spot. I wonder if there is any data on their efficacy by deployment. Or maybe it just depends on the individual. I know one guy who got tagged doing 60ish three times in a week in the same spot because he never noticed the new camera, the giant flash, or the fact that they’d arbitrarily changed the speed limit from 60 to 50 three years prior. Maybe they’re just plain effective on that type of person.
Kira is played by the actress named Nana Visitor.
Back in my day, we just called it getting nailed in the ass and we liked it.
Grabtharto Technology•Age Verification Is A Windfall for Big Tech—And A Death Sentence For Smaller PlatformsEnglish2·27 days agoYou know, I could swear you used to be able to pick countries in it. But all I can find now is kijiji.ca.
Grabtharto Technology•Age Verification Is A Windfall for Big Tech—And A Death Sentence For Smaller PlatformsEnglish7·27 days agoDon’t know where you are, but Kijiji is absolutely thriving in Ontario. My old man has about 40-50 items up at any given time, and has no problems finding buyers to rotate through his stock, and he is nowhere near a major population centre. I just looked at ads for a city centre and there is a lot available. It is definitely possible to work outside of facebook.
Unless you have an old system with a pilot light, you are probably dependent on an electric ignition system. Those have been the norm for a couple decades now for propane and natural gas furnaces.
For sure, most use oil or propane as a primary heat source when gas isn’t available. But those rely on both expensive fossil fuel and electricity to run, so a backup that doesn’t depend on either is handy, especially with all these once in a century storms we get every year now. Wood makes for a cheap, effective backup. Used to be so common in housing too. Now we just get gas furnaces and gas fireplaces for show. Still, I wouldn’t go out of my way to get a woodstove. I agree that a backup generator is plenty for most situations. But if you have an older home with a fireplace, keep a half cord around and make sure the chimney is clean.
As you reach city limits in a lot of cities, it is increasingly likely that you will no longer find gas lines, city water, or sewers. Having a backup heat source is pretty comforting. Much like you, I used to rely on just gas with a generator for backup, but I’ve experienced frozen gas mains, so I like having a woodstove and a couple cords of wood to burn as a backup source of heat. Plus it’s very cozy on damp, cold days, and nicer than the fireplace channel on Christmas.
Well, the next time one of their films gets an A+ it will also be the highest score they have ever received.
