Crazy Fucking Videos•Plane making emergency landing on highway, colliding with carEnglish
2·5 days agoAnd weren’t interstate highways designed partially with aircraft making emergency landings in mind? Or is that like urban legend misinformation?
You can’t eat gold, and you can only trade gold for food if that person can trade the gold for something else. I’m not going to say there’s no chance of gold being valuable in a societal collapse scenario, but I’d rather wager with resources than a pretty, shiny metal. I don’t see how that’s a position that can’t be understood. Gold works as an intermediary exchange, but direct barter can always be counted on.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•"This still does not compare to the kind of audience we would have on Steam": Horses lead says ban virality helped sales "but we're not out of the woods," and he fears "self-censorship" with future...English
61·9 days agoThe comment I was replying to mentioned being against censorship and hoping the game gets put back up on a Steam. While they didn’t say anything about Steam being forced to do anything, I was just following that train of thought to any pressure being put on Steam to put it back on. They have no reason to reverse the decision.

201·9 days agoSteam is a publisher that is free to decide what is or is not allowed on their platform. Everyone is free to choose not to use Steam, just as everyone is free to choose not to play Horses, and platforms are free to not host it. Why should Steam be forced to host it if they have decided not to?

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•When a charging station on a street side public parking space is broken, the parking space is for ... care to guess?English
2·12 days agoYes, if the charger is broken, it does make sense to reserve the space for charging. To maintain the standard of it being for charging only. If it is reserved for charging, but the charger is broken, then no one parks there until the charger is fixed. Unless the charger is being permanently taken offline, then the space should revert to parking for anyone.
This is because the charger being broken is a temporary status. If it turned into a free parking spot whenever the charger were broken, even if people didn’t vandalize the charger they could simply say “oh, I thought it was broken”, or “it was broken earlier when I parked here”.

Bikini Bottom Twitter•Last time I ate a quarter of the bucketEnglish
3·13 days agoI always start eating the popcorn as soon as I sit in my theater seat, and don’t remember the last time I finished the entire bag of popcorn. Once the movie starts, I’m usually more focused on the movie and more concerned with not making too much noise that my grazing on the snacks is cut down by half. If you want to eat popcorn early, eat popcorn early. If you want to wait for the movie, wait for the movie. But there’s no magic ratio shared by all theaters, it’s just whatever pacing you happen to eat at.
This looks like something right out of JoJo’s

No Stupid Questions•Why do some people have so many browser tabs open?English
2·18 days agoI want to ask genuinely, how is the bookmark different than a tab with tab grouping in this instance? I have the bookmarks bar always visible, and have folders organized on the main bar (rather than the drop down extended bar). Wouldn’t tab grouping do the same thing, just slightly higher?
Being fully honest, with that motherboard it will likely be better to attempt a new, fresh build.
Maybe something like this, reusing your RAM, using the stock cooler.
I know you want to upgrade your current parts, but there isn’t much that hadn’t already been said (motherboard layout, case size, power supply). Bumping up RAM to 16GB or even 32. Maybe looking at SFF GPUs like this.

Games•Valve Addresses Steam Machine Anti-Cheat Concerns, Says It's Working Towards SupportEnglish
1·18 days agoThey mean the game is streamed from a server to the player, rather than running on the player’s hardware. This might not be feasible for every game studio to do, but would actually open up the game for more players to be able to play (since local hardware requirements would be lower).
I think this is a terrible idea for other reasons, but accessibility and anti-cheat aspects of it are not some of those reasons.
It’s not really something to follow, just Disney marketing doesn’t mean literally a “princess” a lot of the time

Ask Lemmy•Why do you personally believe in your religion?English
31·20 days agoDuring that time period it wasn’t so much being an atheist that made someone an edge lord, but in how they went about communicating that to others.
There’s princess, and “Disney Princess”, and a Disney Princess doesn’t have to actually be a princess (and been like that for a while)
They don’t mention anything replacing the black fuel. Could just be (likely) the future is unpowered altogether.

In the very, very slight defense, it is a lot cheaper to shovel than to pave, and the person shoveling probably isn’t the same person making the decision about whether it gets paved.

No Stupid Questions•Why isn't it considered vegan to harvest animals who die naturally?English

I switched to Antennapod a couple of months ago and it has been amazing. It offers per-podcast audio boosting, great for those quiet podcasters that expect their listeners to use headphones in a sensory deprivation tank as they whisper from the room across the building from their microphone.

Sounds like it’s a thankless job
