SamuraiBeandogOPto Music Production@sh.itjust.works•Native Instruments VSTs on LinuxEnglish1·3 days agoThat’s great info, thanks. I’m open to changing the distro I use to get the best results so I’ll do some experimenting.
It comes from Vampire: TM, describing the kind of player that plays a Malkavian’s “insanity” as dumb shit like slapping people with a fish (a la Monty Python).

SamuraiBeandogtoCasual discussion about religion@sh.itjust.works•Anyone make their own holy book?English3·8 days agoFor a couple of years now I’ve been formulating a cosmology and religious practice with the intent of reconciling my strong urges towards the spiritual with my reflexive scientific skepticism.
The idea is to embody natural principles and behaviours into deities as an aid to process events and thoughts in constructive and/or ritualised ways. I’m using existing deities, mostly from ancient Canaanite and Sumerian mythology.
The idea was heavily influenced by the essay Meditations on Moloch by Scott Alexander: https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/07/30/meditations-on-moloch/

His opinions on society and politics are another matter. I think his earlier writing is in general more reasonable than where he’s ended up.

SamuraiBeandogto Lovecraft Mythos - Cosmic Horror•The thing a lot of people don't get about Lovecraft's cosmic horror...English2·12 days agoIt had a profound impact on me when I read it years ago. It was a key influence on me constructing a personal religious cosmology and practice, with the purpose of reconciling my strong urges towards the spiritual with my reflexive scientific skepticism.

For the record, I don’t endorse Scott Alexander’s opinions in general.
SamuraiBeandogto Lovecraft Mythos - Cosmic Horror•The thing a lot of people don't get about Lovecraft's cosmic horror...English1·13 days agoI think this is overly literal and simplistic. Sure a person can understand on paper what causes a cyclone or flood. But being in one is an experience completely outside of usual human norms. I would describe the power of a big cyclone or tsunami as “incomprehensible” in precisely the way that a cosmic entity wiping out a city would be; you can read about how many miles per hour the winds are in a cyclone but you don’t really understand what the reality of that kind of force is and just how insignificant you are in the face of it.

Interesting that you liked Quicksilver, that’s usually the one that Stephenson fans find hard to read (I personally love it).
