Thatsalotofpotatoesto Ask Lemmy•Why is Australia the only "core anglosphere" country where voting is mandatory?1·2 年前And this is the real heart of the problem. I would love to see a ban on all political advertising while providing an easily accessible source to read the policies of each party. Without the branding and cults of personality we could have a system that actually makes decision based on policy
Thatsalotofpotatoesto Ask Lemmy•Why is Australia the only "core anglosphere" country where voting is mandatory?1·2 年前I admit it might help the current problem, since people less passionate about the issues might be less inclined to vote for reactionaries, but I don’t think the result would be better representation. Most likely the result would be a system that leans even heavier on marketing to get brand recognition for the party to the most people
Thatsalotofpotatoesto Ask Lemmy•Why is Australia the only "core anglosphere" country where voting is mandatory?2·2 年前The fear and anger is to get people to vote for them. That wouldn’t go away under mandatory voting. Unfortunately, unless we can find a way to resolve the culture war that has spread globally now, that will always be an easy exploit
Thatsalotofpotatoesto Ask Lemmy•Why is Australia the only "core anglosphere" country where voting is mandatory?3228·2 年前Because it’s a terrible idea? Elections are already heavily weighted towards name recognition. What are people who can’t even be bothered to go out to vote going to offer to the process?

I know it’s pedantic, but that’s a rogueLIKE. A roguelite has permanent upgrades

I played this for the first time in years while visiting a friend of mine earlier this year. It still holds up! We tried getting online multiplayer going when I got home but had no luck getting it going. I’ll have to keep an eye on this project.
Thatsalotofpotatoesto World News•Asylum Hostel Torched As Anti-Immigrant Unrest Spirals in IrelandEnglish22·2 年前Also worth mentioning that Ross Lake Hotel was recently sold and I heard the new owner was going to be converting it back into a single house. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new owner decided that was going to be harder than he thought. The timing of it all is very suspect
Thatsalotofpotatoesto Games•'There's almost nobody left': CEO of Baldur's Gate 3 dev Swen Vincke says the D&D team he initially worked with is gone, due to Hasbro layoffsEnglish1·2 年前I can understand why people familiar with DnD mechanics and setting would find it easier to get into BG3, but they’re certainly not easier to learn. You have 4 separate tabs of actions, loaded with different icons (half of which you probably won’t use). I’ve played 5e for years and even I found it pretty cumbersome, especially when 90% of the time your best option is just to press attack. Now that I say it though, maybe that’s why it’s easier. Divinity’s armour made sure you engaged with a variety of different classes and abilities whereas you can go through BG3 just whacking everything on the head and ignoring all your abilities. I’m glad they reached so many people with BG3 but I hope they go back to great tactical combat in the future
Thatsalotofpotatoesto Games•'There's almost nobody left': CEO of Baldur's Gate 3 dev Swen Vincke says the D&D team he initially worked with is gone, due to Hasbro layoffsEnglish131·2 年前I was impressed by how good Larian made BG3 in spite of using tabletop mechanics, but the Divinity games still had much better game play. I hope they start a new IP and add more of the roleplay options that made BG3 great, but with their own mechanics (hopefully without a charisma stat)

As long as people think there is justification for dehumanizing others, it’s easy to manipulate them as to who that “other” is. Chauvin is the product of a shitty system we can celebrate when that system is destroyed.
Thatsalotofpotatoesto Games@sh.itjust.works•EU Council Calls to Protect Culture in Video GamesEnglish101·2 年前These kind of initiatives are actually pretty great. Like most english language media, video games are pretty American dominated. Funding to games with unique perspectives could lead to some really interesting projects. I played a really interesting game called Black Book a while back. It was a fascinating look into Finno-Ugric culture in pre-revolution Russia (and a pretty good game, too). I’d love to see more titles like that
Can’t say I expected to see rimworld up here
I thought it was bad where I live, but when I was in OKC it was so much worse. I’ve never been anywhere so hostile to pedestrians. Sidewalks were jagged and broken and just ended randomly wherever they thought they could squeeze more parking in. Despite being a small city there were highways EVERYWHERE. You could never escape the roar of traffic. My buddy who lives there is in a gated community and even if there was anything around (there wasn’t) you couldn’t walk anywhere anyway because the gate is pressure sensitive to the weight of a car so you can’t actually leave unless you’re driving. I can only hope the next generation of planners can mitigate some of the last generation’s damage in our lifetime
I bought a glue trap once and caught a rat. The poor thing was whining for hours until I finally had to snap it’s neck by hand. Never again. I don’t know why these things exist

This is the third post I’ve seen about Stanley cups and only now did I realize it had nothing to do with hockey. I was very confused how someone had spent $3000 on Stanley cups
