Note that this account is meant to be specially prejudicial against instances, communities, users (even admins) who either don’t seem to be acting in good faith or if they claim to do so while being inconsistent or applying a heavy dose of favoritism.

The determination is substance based and involves whether they are condoning harassment or making unevenly applied claims and accusations, not just downvotes.

This means I’m not ignoring them, just not even seeing them

  • The only clearly defined traits between some of the sockpuppets are their attitudes and insults. If you have to begin to claim that they are in on it and that its all an act, then you can go full in and claim that this entire thread is an act to farm drama from some demented troll, and it can go any way you want.

I can’t say OP inspires me with great confidence regarding their innocence, but going by their arguments and the ones that have been brought on, at least the oldest before the troll accounts began infecting the thread, they made some good points. But all good facades do. Their modlog has its fair share of drama.

The jump from that to a sockpuppeteer, well, frankly, I would assume that’s more the realm of karmawhores from my experience on reddit, and there were no shortage of ones who could be quite charismatic and then flip out to be a completely vulgar toxic troll. Those that sockpuppeteer want control of the narrative, and what’s the best position to have control on a place like Lemmy?

I may have my biases, but I would not stack my bets against one single suspect here.

  • Proof from thee, but not from me? will_steal_your_username is asking for proof when they already got a direct reply that hints at why they believe so (they started all spamming at the same time).

Considering OP didn’t seem to know who banned them, are you also claiming BootyEnthusiast, the user who provided who it was, was in on it? Should be easy to prove, since they are also on dbzer0.

Their comments aren’t even anything like the harassers. And if you are going to claim it’s all an act, why should we assume you aren’t part of one?

  • Doesn’t help that admins have at times decided to encourage alt’ing to bypass bans “because if they are good faith participants, they won’t get banned again”. The problem is the whole federated system means accommodating different standards.

As a proponent of any decent implementation of the idea, I’d just like to point out that if we could select our own moderators for communities, a lot of these alts and sock puppets would probably have been handled by the people I would have aggregated to the list instead of just waiting for the time zone or availability to roll over to the official ones. A lot of these are blatantly obvious.

  • You are talking about going against a cartel of oligopolies that have locked down the technology sector with the IP they control and who have cutthroat control over where the latest technology is deployed. What we at home can do is playact “It’s back to the 90s!” and go back to the technology we had several decades ago, which is more viable than it sounds.

If they want to act like cartels with the greatest and latest, nothing is forcing people to use it. Unfortunately, the technological divide will still be there. Tech minimalism, go human, recycle old tech, we have a lot of crap we’ve disposed off over the years that would otherwise still run fine. To create competition, there needs to be the breeding grounds for it, and if that means having to do with what the lunar lander did, then do so and exercise that brain in the process too.

  • Honestly, someone like JD Vance believes what it is convenient for him to believe, and right now it is convenient for him to believe the same sort of drivel that the base dumb enough to build their authoritarian regime around believes. I don’t think it was coincidence that soldiers were spouted biblical narratives preceding the latest Iran invasion, these are the sort of loyal reliable zealots whose lack of foundation in reality is actually an asset for them. They are the ones being promoted and getting the jobs at the root of their command chains.

  • Unless it’s the downvote circlejerks they are in on, Funny how normal users have to go through exceptional means to find out who is upvoting and downvoting while mods and admins clearly aren’t subjectively performing on the feature. Sounds to me like the worse pattern is excluding someone from entirely unrelated communities, and that modlog hardly offers an explanation.

How much do you want to bet the powermod/admin saw their comments downvoted and that was basically what fueled their ban rage moment? And how much do you want to bet that that user probably has an alt user to do the same, with several months between any actual comments but a daily tabulation of upvotes and downvotes, just to avoid the same scrutiny?

This doesn’t need to be justified, if downvotes are a problem then they should be particularly addressed in the platform (and they are, and sites like reddit have already done so for years), besides the obvious of making them as easy to see as they are to mods or admins. By all means allow communities to vote neuter non-active participants.

Lemmy has a “robust” “community” blocking system (that is easily circumvented by alts - and I’ve even seen admins encourage this over just working out issues and retaining that bit of traceability to an actual person) because users are forced to leave their “communities”, they can’t just choose to switch to a moderation team for the same community. And yes, only a very small portion of most “communities” ever care that deeply about any particular mods, which ironically they would actually do if they had a choice between competing moderating teams instead of the community dramas we’ve had as a result of this “robust” system.

Incidentally, regarding the whole blocking thing, you’ve got a post on Ye Power Trippin’ Bastards that does not make your own moderation look good FYI.

  • The data set and the algorithm are still there, it’s just not available to the public anymore. I wonder who will still get access to it. This just seems to follow the general trend of oligarchs encouraging startups to do anything and everything to disrupt an industry, go as far as they can, and then pull them out through any pressure, government or corporate, as they try to scavenge what they want.

Besides that, there’s still alternatives alive, local or otherwise, and I doubt the people who were using Sora are suddenly going to stop without trying to search for alternatives first. People are celebrating after just chopping off the first head of the hydra.
