    Epstein isn’t dead.

He blackmailed someone into faking his death and getting him out of jail. There are plenty of candidates from Mossad to the president of the USA. He’s keeping a low profile, and if he’s ever found out, he’ll ruin someone, perhaps several someones.

  • If I supported capital punishment, I’d be in favor of firing squads over lethal injection. It’s more honest. Shooting someone is clearly meant to kill while lethal injection dresses it up like a medical procedure.

I oppose capital punishment though. The criminal justice system is not reliable enough to only punish those truly guilty of the worst crimes, it doesn’t seem to be a more effective deterrent than imprisonment, and it usually ends up costing more than imprisonment for an offender’s natural lifespan.

  • Yes, it’s possible. Some things might be challenging, like keeping the system up to date without the user having access to an app repository, but it’s possible e.g. by running a script as a cron job.

Whether it’s a good idea is harder to say. Linux distributions for phones are not especially mature and polished compared to desktop Linux. You might get better advice if you explain why you want to do this and who the intended user is.

  • I’ve been running Gnome on a Surface for a while. It’s an outstanding tablet UI except for its onscreen keyboard. The keyboard is terrible. I could write a full-length article about how terrible the keyboard is, but here are a few quick complaints:

    • No long-press layer; most other OSKs have a secondary layer to get numbers and punctuation via long-press
    • No way to move the cursor; it’s drag on the spacebar for most OSKs
    • No way to add the number row to the default layer; numbers always require tapping a key to activate the number layer
    • No arrow or modifier keys by default; they show up in Gnome Console, but I might use a different terminal app or need them elsewhere
    • No good way to switch to a third-party keyboard system-wide; even iOS has that now

Who do you want privacy from and why?

That’s not a rhetorical question. It matters. If you want privacy from corporations and governments doing mass surveillance because you’re against mass surveillance in principle, Signal is great! As long as you don’t give janky apps permission to read your notifications, or you limit what Signal shows in its notifications, your device won’t leak to those kinds of threat actors. You can’t be sure everyone you talk to is as fastidious though.

If the cops, gangsters, or similar are likely to target you and the people you’re talking to directly, there’s a good chance just using Signal without a security plan won’t keep them from getting the contents of the conversation as in this recent incident where the FBI extracted deleted messages from notification logs. To defend against that specific attack, everyone needs to configure Signal to keep message content and contact details out of the notification. Dedicated devices for secure communication set up by someone who knows what they’re doing are ideal in this situation. Signal is still a good choice here, but Signal alone won’t guarantee privacy.

If you’re being targeted by an intelligence agency from a rich country that has allocated a significant budget to surveil you in particular, you’re probably screwed. There’s plenty of public information about how US government officials and contractors are required to work with classified information to get a sense of how you might try to mount a defense. It’s guaranteed to be inconvenient.

People type usernames more than once in 2026? I thought everyone had password managers by now.

Either way, the real username there is Nemo in standard Latin characters and ℕ𝕖𝕞𝕠 is a display name configured in the settings.

others who are interested pull copies of them to their server where they can respond or not.

To be technical, most ActivityPub federation is push, not pull. The server sends actions to other servers with members that have subscribed to the relevant community. In some cases, a user asks for something a server doesn’t have and it attempts to pull it from the server that hosts it.

  • I remember being a kid and hearing about a family member’s workplace instituting a rule against discussing pay after some people got upset they were making less than their coworkers and started advocating for higher pay.

Neither I nor anyone in my immediate family was a leftist, but it seemed really obvious the primary reason for the rule was that management didn’t want people to have reasons to demand higher pay.

  • One would think that humanity would have learned from the coronavirus pandemic that anyone who might have a contagious disease should stay the fuck home.

Even a psychopath whose sole priority is exploiting workers to maximize economic output should understand that a sick worker coming in and making ten workers sick will result in lower productivity than that worker staying home.
