A good number of Lemmy users seem to not understand the value of the voting system. Perhaps over a fear of brigading. I don’t know, makes zero sense to me

Lemmy’s user base has been stagnant at half a million for over a year now. Something needs to improve. We’re still too small to have vibrant niche communities. I don’t necessarily want the kind of garbage that came in over the past 10 years or so here. I was already looking for an alternative to Reddit for quite a few years before the big Lemmy migration occurred 2 years ago. But I think we need to hit at least a million users to have the same quality and breadth of content we used to enjoy on the old site before Aaron died.

If you don’t vibe with what’s popular in your community, maybe you should find a different community. That’s the beauty of the fediverse

We should be a better community with better norms, but the software should be at parity with what we had in 2008

I mean like when people post pseudoscience to a science community or something that’s completely off topic. Or maybe a poor stick figure being submitted to an art community. The community voting filter is integral, and if you don’t like it you should just use Mastodon rather than Lemmy

No, I don’t believe this is an open source project. But I’m not aware of any alternatives. I can’t remember seeing an ad in the UI any time I’ve used it. Maybe a tiny banner ad if ever. But terrestrial radio stations all have ads embedded, so even an open solution would technically have ads
