I think everyone has given you all you need to know, but whats another comment?

Those pointing out the concerns with combat are correct, if you’re not enjoying it by now then you’re going to struggle with it through-out. Granted, as you get more, and more powerful materia, and equipment, you may find that sate your needs in this area. But I’m not sure it would by much.

Unlike other people, VII isn’t my favourite but I do still enjoy it and the story does pick up much more later. I always find Kalm and Junon to be a lull after Midgar (even if there are some highlights among this section), and have had to power through when I’ve played it. I’d say after Costa-del-sol is a good time to reassess if you’ve got the energy to continue. If not, then there’s no harm in taking a step back from the game and calling it a day - it doesn’t sound like you’re attached to any aspect of it right now, so you’re not losing out on anything.

  • Interesting but ultimately non-answer about turn based combat returning to Final Fantasy.

With this question of turn-based versus action, it tends to isolate the gameplay to just the battle system. That doesn’t take into account what kind of game the creators want to deliver to players. For example, based on a certain graphical quality we want to present to our players, or the narrative we want to deliver to our players, it relates to how we set up the game’s systems around it. This includes the battle system, game design, and gameplay feel. It’s not a clear-cut answer, whether it will become all turn-based, or if it’s going to become more action-based.

I believe it’s a separate patch rather than continuation of the same maintenance, or fix for a fix.

There’s an issue in Forked Tower fourth boss where German and French language players aren’t able to distinguish between 2 attacks due to the names being the same in those languages. There’s a fix coming in this that looks to correct naming of those attacks for those players - it’s mentioned in the notes.

Also some mention of additional fixes expected in the upcoming Live Letter.

It was likely planned this way as the previous maintenance was for mostly infrastructure.

How do you set that up? What is the purpose for it?

I forgot the name for it when I first wrote that, but it’s Button Chords in Steam controller layouts. The idea is that you have a button act as a different one when you have a modifier pressed. So if I use a single button for example, due to my mapping, while I have L4 pressed, A will act as Down on the D-Pad. This is useful because it allows me to continually move and still use all my abilities. Without this in place I’d have to remove my thumb from the left stick to use actions applied to the D-Pad, causing me to stop moving. Now I can move and use my D-Pad actions without any stopping. Even more useful when there’s large pulls in dungeons or I am dodging AOE but wanting to keep DPS going.

Thanks for the advice, I have been using this https://www.xivbars.com/job/BRD/6188, but a bit modified.

I see. I’m still not fully complete with all my abilities yet but this is what I have so far for mine with a few extras.

It’s so pretty and cool looking though! I tried and then it got lost from my view. I’ll try again! I get it, but if you like it as it is, just leave it! It’s only minor space saving.

I’ve been replaying as Bard since I got my Steam Deck so there’s been a few things that are handheld (or SD) specific, so you might need to find the equivalent for your LegionGo.

    1. Take advantage of the back buttons - I have R4 set to focus toggle, and L4 set to toggle ABXY to ↑↓←→. The L4 being the most useful as it allows me to move and still use abilities that would require my left hand.
    2. I have the left trackpad mapped to trigger common and specially mapped keys (look up Steam Deck Radial Menus). Think; map, chocobo mount, macros. The keys are then set on a hidden hotbar so I can clear space from the screen.

What you have doesn’t look that bad, but here recommendations and ideas based on your screenshot above.

    1. You need to consider what you need and actually use in your x-hotbars. Like I see an Elixir on L2+↑ - your a bard, you don’t need that.
    2. Consider groupings of abilities, I don’t have a screenshot at hand but for example mine is laid out as:
    • R2 - ABXY - Single target abilities. DPad - oGCD single target abilities.
    • L2 - ABXY - AOE abilities. DPad - Offensive buffing songs.
    • R2 → L2 - Defensive + Offensive buffs.
    • L2 → R2- ABXY - Defensive buffing songs. DPad - misc (return, sprint, etc)
    1. Consider changing the Song Bar to simple mode to free up some space/distraction.
    2. Less importantly imo - It’s possible to create macros to toggle UI elements, so you can have one to quickly remove/add things when you need or don’t need it.

I’d say a lot of the issues your having are going to go as you become more accustomed to the game and learn the fights, gain more situational awareness, and so on.

  • I had the same reaction to it, but ended up buying it after looking into some gameplay. I’m glad I did because there’s a really enjoyable game outside of the “sex appeal.” Combat is good and fun, there’s an interesting story there too. My only major complaint is that about 2/3 or 3/4 through the game it turns into a boss rush, and almost feels like the devs ran out of time or budget so cut some story.

As for the community, it’s easy to get around that by just not taking part. I’ve avoided it for the same reasons you’re not wanting to play. It’s a shame there too because I imagine there’s well meaning people who truly love what the game has to offer outside of fan service, and would love to discuss lore, etc.

If you’ve played Revenant Wings then maybe take a look at other games in the Ivalice Alliance series - XII may be the more appropriate choice as RW is its sequel.

Otherwise I’d consider one of the more turn-based ones to get a flavour of those FF games. FFX is probably going to be a top choice there and you’re already looking at it, but there’s plenty of good ones to decide from. My favourite is VIII but that doesn’t mean it’s the best for you. IX is a common favourite that you might also enjoy. And FFVI from pre-PlayStation era is another common favourite.
