You need to establish the rules before having a staring contest with them.

With all their independent eye muscle control, they can partially close an eye, moisten it back up with the nictitating membrane, turn their head so you can’t see one eye… Ah things they will argue are not actual blinks. They’re really bad sports. They never learned to play well with others.

It’s so cool to learn about all the different types of feathers. From ones that are just from insulation to ones that help them hear, they can serve so many different purposes for the birds.

I’ve seen people say fish owls and fishing owls don’t have as many sound reducing features to their feathers as other owls due to their primary prey being under running water so they wouldn’t hear them anyway. Haven’t found what I’d consider to be a primary resource on that yet though.

  • This is a different album than I was thinking. A year or so ago someone shared an album where each song had a different owl noise sampled for the tracks.

This post is a bit more musical though, the other was very experimental from what I recall.

I didn’t get to see any Burrowing Owls as I had hoped on my trip (further from where we were than I thought) but I did see 5 Screeches at the Tampa Zoo having some lovely. Naps during the daylight hours.

This pair was right up front enjoying the warm sun on their tummies.

  • Donors of every variety are crucial. Specimens from departed owls have inspired people like myself to keep learning about these amazing animals and get involved hands-on with their care, and there are practical applications like the feather replacement done here.

It’s sad when animals pass, but at least this way it’s not a total loss, and this owl’s life will be all the better for it.
