Selfhosted•Journiv v0.1.0-beta.10: Timeline, Calendar View and Dynamic Tag SupportEnglish
4·5 days agoJourniv has got me to try journaling seriously for the first time. I’m a bit envious of those able to do so naturally, I’ve been forgetting to make daily entries more often than not

Fuck Cars•Many Americans Are Open to Car-Free LivingEnglish
6·7 days agoOne of our recent council meetings had a developer wanting to rezone a lot to medium density but needed a variance to allow for less parking given the size of the parcel.
Council unanimously approved the rezoning citing the need for more medium density projects, but were completely divided on the vote for the parking variance. They could not fathom that a developer would know best how many parking spaces would be needed to still be functional and profitable. All they wanted was to reduce the requirement from 1.5 spaces per unit down to 1.25 spaces per unit. A decrease of like 9 spaces total.
Luckily the variance was eventually approved but not before a lot of debate and grandstanding about what people are supposed to do with their cars.

Pluribus@lemmy.zip•Pluribus - 1x07 "The Gap" - Episode DiscussionEnglish
6·7 days agoI found it quite the opposite of annoying. This episode had some beautiful cinematography showing the south america trek to the point I was questioning if this entire thing was funded by tourism boards. Maybe not the most exciting to watch but I’ve mostly come to expect as much.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Why Co-ops Are the Solution to Our Housing CrisisEnglish
8·10 days agoDon’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
CMHC already has programs available to fully fund non-market housing initiatives as long as you can meet certain requirements. One of the biggest issues is that nearly everybody sees housing as an investment and not simply a shelter so if there’s no money in it then they aren’t interested.

3·12 days agoGiven that they freed all the zoo animals, I think it’s safe to assume that all farm animals have also been released. They would need to randomly come across a chicken’s nest first which I don’t think is sustainable.
I think it’s the change in medium that does it.
spoiler
Sorry if this spoiler text doesn’t work. The only records left behind by the Nomai were their writings, save for a few pictograms, which left a lot to the imagination. The Owlks did have writing, but it was clear that visual story telling was much more important to their culture so we got to see for ourselves what they went through. Seeing the prisoner at the end would not have hit so hard had we just read about them.
Biking through unplowed snow sucks, but it’s hardly impossible. The worst part about it is having to deal with traffic at the same time

13·20 days agoYou’ve received a tonne of responses and I’m not even sure if this has been posted by someone else already, but there’s a YouTube video called “How to Radicalize a Normie” which goes over at length exactly how the alt right gets its hooks into young people and why it’s so hard for them to break out.

I was shocked to see no mention of Ori in any of the comments here before I realized you had already recommended it in the OP. I have no issues with seconding that, the Ori series is really good.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I just wanted to compare FOSS Linux budgeting softwareEnglish
4·1 month agoI’ve been using Actual for a while now, probably close to a year. Before that I was on YNAB, which isn’t FOSS but does have a huge library of material for how to make your budget work for you instead of the other way around.
I got off YNAB after they kept raising their subscription fees for seemingly no reason. Actual is not nearly as feature-rich but you can’t really argue with the price.

7·1 month agoIt seems that this hivemind is behaving like a newborn intelligence complete with naivete and innocence, even if it’s made up of the sum of human experience and knowledge.
It’s still too early to judge how much of its behaviour is authentic as it’s trying to figure out how to live and grow, or if it’s actually malevolent and self-interested
