If it involves pirating their conciousnesses and modding them into the Sims then I’m all for it

World News•Australian government prepares social media ban amid opposition to privacy and free speech violationEnglish
3·5 days agoIronically, if age estimation was done via usage history algorithms, it’d be a much more privacy preserving technique than literally scanning your face or ID into a website that then hands it off to a barely known biometrics company so you can keep using your account…
It’s so strange how this legislation apparently is supposed to safeguard the safety of kids on the internet, but hands tremendous risk to adults who verify, or parents who’s kids sneakily took their ID to verify their accounts, since it seems that we may be the cyberattack victim capital of the world; see Qantas, Lattitude Financial, Optus, Medibank, and so on until the end of time.

I’ve actually begun DIYing a syncthing based mesh of my devices plus a NAS I’ll make from an old ThinkPad because honestly, fuck those cloud services.
I used to love the cloud, I saw it as really convenient, but now I just see it as a pretty ok way to back up all my old school work, plus OneDrive screaming at me to sign in, then automatically signing me in without asking…
Sure the DIY NAS I’m making is just an old ThinkPad 11e school laptop’s board and battery, and some USB to m.2 dongles, but it’ll be pretty damn good for a net cost of probably 100 bucks total

Open Source@lemmy.ml•What open-source Android apps should people know about?
6·8 days agoI’ve actually replaced my phone, messages and contacts apps with the fossify ones and I gotta say, the oppo ones were slow, would jump sometimes and just were very slow to respond to when texts or calls hit the phone. In contrast, the fossify messages app responds pretty much instantly to messages, the fossify phone app responds instantly to calls, and the two consume way less resources than the preloaded apps.

Cats aren’t animals, they’re robots. The reason they purr is because they have fans.
Instead of selling him, unscrew the 4 pentalobe screws to remove the stomach plate, which will then expose 2 torx T6 screws to remove the neck plate. This then exposes 3 of the 7 total torx T4 screws for the 3 frame pieces that need to be unscrewed to access the motherboard. Before accessing the motherboard, 6 Philips head screws must be unscrewed and the board then can be pulled out.
Unfortunately, most cats have soldered LPDDR5 RAM chips, and therefore can only be desoldered to extract the DRAM chips, although some models of cat sometimes do have upgradable ram, such as pre 2015 cats with standard SO-DIMM modules (usually 2 sticks from 2 to 4 GB each,) or rare high spec cats which tend to have LPCAMM modules instead (on average being 1 stick of 32gb or higher).
So I guess you can be a smart fella AND a fart smella

Lemmy Shitpost•‘End-to-end encrypted’ smart toilet camera is not actually end-to-end encrypted
13·10 days agoConsidering there has been a massive wave of smart cameras everywhere in and outside homes in the past and especially recently getting “hacked”, it’s not a stretch that randomly picking cameras to look through could yield a droopy balls and veiny cock jumpscare
