  • So fun story, I recently set up Mint to dual boot with windows 10, then shortly later decided it was working just fine and reformatted my whole windows drive. Which included the boot partition that pointed to Mint.

The problem was that I updated my MOBO bios after using a USB to install Mint, and now my USB installer (needed to run Boot Repair) opened to a command line instead of the installer. While trying to find the settings to fix that I restored factory defaults in my BIOS which triggered Secure Boot, which wouldn’t let me turn it off without disconnecting all of my hard drives first (and that is a whole thing with my m.2’s).

Anyway it turns out my USB had gone bad so I made a new one and fixed it, but man I never thought I could break my computer so many different ways at once. Don’t delete your boot loader, guys.

  • My brother got minecraft to play with my niece and there are two versions now, from what I can tell one that’s like what I was playing a decade ago but updated, and one that has microtransactions. The old one lets you download skins and mods for free. It seemed like a no brainer but he went with the microtransaction one, and now my niece keeps asking for cosmetics.

There must be a reason to yoke yourself to the pay-for-skins version, but I’m really not sure.

I am normally good at suspension of disbelief, but even as a kid this one was hard for me. The storm troopers never showed themselves as particularly precise shooters. The sandpeople seemed above average in comparison. The shots on the sand crawler were frankly all over the place. No non-verbal evidence for his claim whatsoever.

  • I was in high school and had the same thought. If a few thousand people dying gets you this mad you must be absolutely livid every day. I remember making a joke about it a year after it happened and the person I was talking to, who didn’t lose anyone and wasn’t pro-war or anything, got so mad about it. I decided never to bring it up again because apparently everyone was hypnotized by a news broadcast of it that I missed, and the whole country was agreed that this specific attack was the worst thing that had ever happened anywhere to anyone.

I can’t stop thinking “Shouldn’t you guys be so much more angry at the preventable COVID deaths? There were so, so many and our president at the time told us not to wear masks or quarantine. Surely the death toll should be generally related to the anger?”

  • I heard someone say once that the worst possible thing he could do for approval ratings with his base is go on TV and actually, earnestly apologize for something he did wrong and show true empathy. Like tears in his eyes “I am so sorry” acknowledgement of a wrong.

Democrats would love a representative with human emotion, but it would be an instant career killer for the GOP.

There’s a surprise quick time event in Assassin’s Creed 2 where Leonardo Da Vinci goes in for a hug, and if you don’t press X reasonably quickly he pulls back looking a little bummed out.

I ripped my power cord out of the wall to make sure it didn’t save.

  • I knew lots of kids who wanted to be teachers. Ask a kid that age to list their favorite people and their teacher will pop up often, because it’s someone they know. Teaching is something tangible to them.

I also knew several adults who wanted to be a teacher, but quit shortly after starting because they literally couldn’t afford it due to unreasonably low wages. We should really treat good teachers better.

Sometimes teachers repeat a lesson plan over and over, and a small innocuous statement grows in intensity with each retelling and each argument with students as the teacher digs in their heels, until it’s ballooned into something silly. I’ve also heard that suction and centrifugal force are a myth.

OK, I understand that you’re trying to make a point to better my understanding of the material you are currently teaching, but now I’m hung up on this weird thing you said. It usually comes down to something “the language to describe this thing is insufficient when expressed this way” but the way they say it is like “this concept is a lie, full stop, no more thinking.”

Maybe they initially wanted to use more definitive statements to make students listen in class or something.

I’ve never once voiced this thought out loud, but every time someone says something like “I don’t want fish, I want to eat meat” I think “Well, you’re wrong, but OK.” There’s some arbitrary dividing line people assume is logical, but I don’t think it would hold up to serious scrutiny.
