Greece is one of the most corrupt countries in Europe. They don’t respect driving laws. They openly throw trash in the streets. They smoke right in front of “Please don’t smoke here” signs.

For pedantry’s sake, these aren’t examples of corruption. In order for it to be “corruption,” there has to be someone in a position of power who is misusing their power.

    definition

[0] “Corruption is a form of dishonesty or a criminal offense that is undertaken by a person or an organization that is entrusted in a position of authority to acquire illicit benefits or abuse power for one’s gain.” (wikipedia)).

Some examples of corruption would be:

    • Bribing a public servant to get better service (link)
    • Fraud and money laundering (link
    • Bribing a politician to win state contracts or improve terms of existing contracts (link 1, link 2)

Also don’t take more than the recommended max dosage. Taking 10 grams of acetaminophen in 24 hours is enough for possible fatal liver damage. That’s 20 to 30 pills, depending on dosage.

For comparison, ibuprofen has an LD50 of 636mg/kg of body weight. For 70kg bodyweight, that means consuming over 40 grams of ibuprofen (200+ regular strength pills).

To light up a location as brightly as the Sun would, you need to cover a half-degree circle in the sky (viewed from that location) with mirrors that reflect the Sun directly at the location.

That’s the best, simplest example I’ve seen for why this doesn’t work. But…I wanted to look at it from the perspective of irradiance losses from the beam spreading. It’s been a long time since I did any optics, so I could be way off-base with my approach. Feel free to correct anything I screw up.

    Here are my assumptions:

    1. Near space irradiance from the sun is 1,367 W/m^2 [0]. Let’s round up and assume the mirror gets 1400 W/m^2 from the sun.
    2. We want 1000 W/m^2 on the ground to qualify as daylight [1]
    3. Collimated light
    4. No attenuation or scatter from the atmosphere, but we will assume the beam diameter spreads 0.5 degrees [2]
    5. Perfectly reflective mirror
    6. Mirror 600 km away from the earth

Beam spreading loss is a function of distance. So however large the beam width (mirror diameter) starts, it’ll be this much bigger when it reaches the ground:

    600km * tan (0.5 degree) = 5.24km

That means if we have a 1m diameter mirror, we get a beam 5.24km + 1m on the ground. If we have a 5km diameter mirror, we get a 10.24km beam on the ground.

To get our target of 1000 W/m^2, we need at least 1000/1400 = 0.71 of what hits the mirror to hit our target.

    mirror/(mirror+spread) >= 0.71 mirror >= 12.83km

    [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunlight#Measurement
[1] Wikipedia says that we actually get more like 1100 W/m^2 when the sun is at its zenith.

  • I haven’t played in a few years so take this with a grain of salt.

My approach is to build things out incrementally. If your cashflow stays positive the entire time, you won’t have money problems.

For design, try to find modular chunks you can repeat. A cellblock with bathroom and showers. A canteen. Make blueprints from them and twist them.

Do you have a foundation and walls around the entire space? I usually kept most stuff outside with a fence around the perimeter.

It’s powerful, lightweight, and ubiquitous. If you do sysadmin work, remote into a random machine, and need to update a config file, it probably has vi installed already. It’s also extensible enough to use as a full IDE.

Personally, I like it because of how fast it feels and because I can do everything while keeping my hands on the home row of the keyboard.

If you look at the mechanisms of poisons, they all mess up some process in the animal or plant.

For example, Glyphosate is a very effective herbicide. It prevents plants from producing some amino aids. It “starves” the plant.

I don’t know how dead it is, but it’s pretty straightforward to set up your own gateway (public or private). Even if you don’t have a tech background, there’s the “IPFS Desktop” app that stands up the IPFS service locally.
