And yet you wouldn’t change it at all.

It was a great many hours of running a GPU stress test that used 100% of the GPU causing the fans to go full bore.
My guess is coil whine is caused by the parts not fitting together properly meaning that the motor not having enough oomph to move the fans over the extra friction.
I have a Gigabyte 1070 from a previous build that had coil whine.
Ended up being fixed after a long stress test ran the fans at full speed for a while.

Linux@lemmy.ml•QNAP TR-002 detected, shows as unallocated - guidance on possible resolutionsEnglish
1·7 days agoIt’s likely been set up as a Windows software raid array which I believe you have to do some janky work arounds to get them recognized.
Linux is seeing it as an unformated JBOD.
Your best bet would be to use Windows to move everything off the drives then wipe & re-set it up under Linux.
Have you tried planting a tray of grass for him to eat instead?

Homelab@selfhosted.forum•Low power draw cpu that can be used without fan?English
2·13 days agoYou would be looking at either:
-
A raspberry pi with a big slab of metal attached as a heat sink.
-
An Intel N100/N150 system in a fan less case.

cats•I don't see any way that I could get up and do things under these circumstancesEnglish
15·15 days agoYou know the law.
Someone else will have to do those things for you.
People underestimate how great naps are.
Cats are just trying to teach us how great they are as we learn too late in life.

networking@sh.itjust.works•Nexalta Guardian: is this a good secure network solution?English
1·20 days agoIt is likely floundering because anyone with more than beginner networking/security knowledge know that having everything combined is a very very bad idea.
Having it all in one means that when someone gets access to it, they get access to everything.
You are much better off having separate devices for:
- Router/firewall
- NAS device
- WiFi Access Point
- Server
- Switch
And you should be using VLAN’s to only allow devices access to what they need.
And as a plus having everything separated means if one device breaks or you need to upgrade, you only have to replace that one part instead on replacing the all in one device costing 50 times more.

Firefox•If embedded Tiktok & Twitter pages are blocked, can I at least open them in new tabs?English
3·29 days agoIf you click on the blue button it will open up the settings box to allow these embeds only for the site you are on.
Looks like Grumpy Cats cousin Disappointed Cat (He’s not angry just disappointed).
To be honest they are all pretty similar in operation, with ports, battery size and output power being the major differences between the devices. I was running a M7 and only upgraded to a M11S for a larger battery.
The M21 should be fine for everyday use with most IEM’s or low power headphones.
The M21 should be a good starting point for you.
You know that there are 3D print plans available for Batcat head pieces…

Linux@lemmy.ml•SOLVED: Ethernet stopped working hours after installation. Wifi works OK.English
3·2 months agoIt’s not a true hibernation state hence my statement “Fast boot is a bastardized version of hibernation”.
It’s a hybrid sleep/hibernate system that causes more problems than it should.
Not all hardware works with it, it causes problems with updates and some software does not play nicely with it.
I know of a number of business IT departments that disable it company wide as it is a considerable source of problems.

Aotearoa / New Zealand@lemmy.nz•One in seven Kiwis believe violence may be needed to 'get country back on track', survey findsEnglish
47·2 months agoSo they did a “survey” of 0.018% of the New Zealand population (1000 people) and start squawking about their “findings” from that survey.
A real and proper survey would include at least 35% of the population in at least every major city.
Basically a bull shit survey by the Taxpayer Union (a political group) and bull shit journalism by Stuff.
They both should be ashamed.

18·2 months agoIf you are dual booting make sure that windows fast boot is disabled.
Fast boot is a bastardized version of hibernation which can keep hardware “in use” by windows if any other OS tries to use the hardware.
One of the common issues is ethernet & wifi not working or not connecting.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is it so hard to get Nvidia GPUs working with Linux?English
14·2 months agoThe issues with Nvidia GPU’s has been blown up way to much in the last few years in my opinion.
The potential problems you “might” face are:
- Not backing up your system before updating
- Using too old or too new a kernel version (Older versions may break or cause issue with newer drivers and bleeding edge kernels may introduce issues that weren’t caught during QA) * Always have a LTS kernel installed as well as a newer supported kernel
- Using brand new hardware too soon (aka don’t expect a newly released card to work perfectly day one)
- Trying to use GPU’s in edge case uses or pushing the envelope without knowing what you are doing
- Not backing up your system
- Trying to use the wrong kind of card for your needs (A Quadro card isn’t going to work well as a RTX card)
- Not updating your system (Nvidia drivers get regular updates)
For most major distros now a days you either select the Nvidia option when installing (like Manjaro) or install the drivers afterwards (Ubuntu based) and be off to the races.
Set up and use Timeshift, make a backup before installing updates and you can roll back if there is an issue.

HiFi - For The Audio Connoisseur•Recommendations for active noise cancelling Bluetooth capability over ear headphones with mic? Hi quality audio for music is a must.
1·2 months agoLikely because bad audio on a phone call can slow things down as the call taker/recipient tries to understand what the other is saying.
Plus people get pissed off when they have to repeat themselves multiple times.
So it ends up being cheaper to get good quality headsets so people stay “happier” and the employee can take more calls.

They are all low power mode so none of them.
Once their chaos batteries are full then they will be put back in the rotation for it.
