Dead serious question: I have only ever worked in the public sector (state level and local municipality) but often see or hear about these seemingly idiotic “interview questions” on television (and obviously memes).

3. an actual phenomenon in the private sector

If 3, what on earth is its purpose and what could the interviewer possibly find out about the applicant by asking this?

And now some unsolicited opinion. Feel free to disregard!

Every step one wants to take away from addiction must start there, if you ask me: respect that the substance, the ritual, the behavior or whatever one is addicted to is in fact solving a problem for you. We are not that intelligent on the primal level to sort things out “logically” when we are in a fight or flight situation. Only after having accepted and defined what problems the addiction has been solving should one go to the next step: is this method of problem solving sustainable? What does it give me vs. what does it cost me? Depending on where you are in your journey, one might accept certain costs - for instance physical and financial health - in order to gain certain things - for instance mental stability, sleep, a sense of happiness etc.

Not with the front end iptables. Linux can filter packets based on their source and destination IP, port and MAC address. It can also filter packets based on their state, being NEW,ESTABLISHED, RELATES,INVALID and UNTRACKED. You can check what processes are establishing connections with for instance ss or lsof -i and what commands or binaries/executables stand for those processes with for instance ps.

I know of no userland utility with which one could specify processes, command names or binaries/executables to block. Which might seem like a hassle from a Windows perspective, but the level of control that you achieve with Linux’s packet filtering is neat and it has taught loads about how networking and the Internet works. :)

The first time it happened, I went all in. It was my responsibility to keep them alive. I acted like I was a court appointed guardian, like a therapist, a parent, a friend and I tried to act in many more capacities. I sacrificed school and work just to physically be with them. I had them sleep over at my place. And much more. And how did I act? I tried to guilt them into staying alive. As in, I could say things like “how could you do that to me/your loved ones/etc?” Whatever effect that “strategy” had or didn’t have on them, it absolutely destroyed me. I got burned out. I had to recuperate for months, which in turn - naturally - impacted my school and career.

The second time it happened, I had learned my lesson: it’s not okay to blame people for wanting to die. I am not them. I cannot understand what they are going through. Even though them wanting to end their life made me angry, I held it back and told them how sorry I am that they feel that way. And that I am here to listen. And that they are not alone. And that feelings come and go, and that tomorrow may very well be the best day of the rest of their lives. No more shaming somebody who is already at their lowest. No more taking on the responsibility of professional therapists and doctors.

Five years later, here I am, having for the first time in my life feelings of absolute worthlessness and - would you know - the thought of death being a way to end my suffering does cross my mind. I’m not willing to die yet, but the sense of helplessness makes me understand even more how bad it was to try to keep somebody alive through scorn.

I finally understand your point. That’s true though with or without the use of a firewall. Not becoming infected by malware through ports that are otherwise used for common connections can preemptively only be achieved with good cyber hygiene. Once infected, I guess I’d need access control lists and/or software that blocks code execution based on signatures, but I’m not aware of such software for Linux.

I always encrypt all my drives - external or internal - because at the very least, I have nothing to loose with today’s computing power. The overhead isn’t noticeable for me once the drives are decrypted, which takes two seconds with my Ryzen 5800 x3d.

Regarding what you said specifically about the peace of mind that it gives me if and when I were to sell the drives: YES. encryption can even be used as a method of securely wiping scrambling content.
