  • In slightly less than half the states (TIL—I thought it was most or all of them), the electors were chosen by the state legislatures, not using any sort of popular vote at all.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1788–89_United_States_presidential_election

States had varying methods for choosing presidential electors. In five states, the state legislature chose electors. The other six chose electors through some form involving a popular vote, though in only two states did the choice depend directly on a statewide vote.

Arguably, that system (along with the pre-17th Amendment method of choosing senators) had better federalist separation of powers, by giving more importance to your state-level representative(s) instead of letting those things be a popular vote.

  • You’re going to have a hard time finding fully-waterproof sneaker-style shoes because the nature of a sneaker implies holes for ventilation and a slit between the tongue and the upper.

I’m aware these aren’t what you asked for, but since that doesn’t exist you might have to consider them anyway:

You could get some cycling shoe covers, although they’re intended to go over roadie cycling shoes for use with clipless pedals (3-post cleats), not regular sneakers.

You could also get mountain-biking shoes (2-post cleats) or trail-running shoes, but they won’t be fully waterproof.

Personally, when I was commuting a decent distance by bike (far enough to justify using clipless pedals), I wore cycling sandals when it was warm enough and mountain-biking shoes when it wasn’t, and then changed into dry non-athletic shoes that I kept at the office.

    Neat, thanks!

I’m not thrilled about the camera quality (compared to a purpose-built surveillance cam with 4k and good low-light performance) and I wish it had PoE, but damn, can’t beat that price!

(Side note: does anybody else find it weird that PoE is so uncommon and/or adds so much to the cost of these IoT dev boards? I get that normal people don’t want the hassle of running cable, but it feels like the hole in the market is bigger than it should be.)

How you gonna get the video feed off an IP cam and onto your NVR without connecting it to your network?

You’re not seriously suggesting using old analog cameras in 2025, are you?

There are modern roundabouts and then there are rotary intersections. Modern roundabouts have traffic entering the circle yield to traffic already within it, while rotary intersections have traffic within the circle yield to traffic entering. That makes rotaries, but not modern roundabouts, susceptible to locking up like this.
