Ultimately any economical and Political system will struggle with this. Capitalism can work if you have a taxation and redistribution of the wealth. Otherwise all wealth eventually congregates like mass in a black hole. Simultaneously you can have a system that might have fairer basic ideals but ends up just as corrupt. See the various attempts at communism.

The tricky part is the vigilance. Imagine a Musk raising his arm for a hearty ‘sieg heil’ in 1945-80. Now he got away with it. Generations forget. Safeguards get erroded away over time as the greedy goblins hammer away at them like woodpeckers.

The loaded gun is always there. The dangerous men always try to get to it. We gotta guard it 24/7. Not an easy task.

Posts like this are like a mechanic saying “There is no reason for a manufacturer to force drivers into having a catalytic converter in their own engine”

It’s more along the lines of “There’s no reason for manufacturers to forbid my mechanic from installing a perfectly fine catalytic converter just because said manufacturer doesn’t like it”

Giving manufacturers full control over the software users run will not end well. Why should google tolerate a browser that runs an adblock extension? Currently they do so because the alternative would be losing users to alternatives but if they have all android devices under control and make deals with most of the browser devs (it’s all chromium already and firefox is almost entirely financed by google) then you’ll find yourself forced to watch ads. This is what they’re slowly creeping towards.

  • I used to play WoW 5v5 arena competitively in 2007. This was way before they went hard on e-sports so it’s not really comparable to today. Just to give you some perspective, the winning team at blizzcon got $25k which meant $5k each which (again, only in case of winning the world championship) would’ve just so covered my travel costs.

Honestly it was terrible. At first I used to play for fun and only accidentally ended up in a top team. Then my team got way too ambitious and it became more of a chore. I told them early on that I had no interest in playing like that but they couldn’t find a replacement so I kept playing with them until I was fully burned out. It was nice being good at something but it ruined the fun of it.

  • It’s not just the left bar but also the entitlement of the others. Recently we had a reduction of parking spots at our workplace. The remaining ones are no longer free but cost a hefty price.

One of my coworkers send an email to all employees with a long rant about this. He said if they’d do this he’d be forced to ride to work on his horse. So this guy has a big ranch outside the city with horses simply as his hobby and he’s upset about having to pay for the space his truck is taking because he considers all of those things his right.

But the donations are only necessary because of inflated salaries. It’s like saying we have to pay this pastry chef because the pastry chef loves to eat their own cake. They’re just feeding themselves.

The cost of server infrastructure is comparatively tiny so if they’d run it lean it’d have enough cash to last ages already. Also posting a banner on their site with massive reach isn’t exactly rocket surgery.

I know there are worse things but I strongly dislike nonprofits wasting donation money.

on the one hand they make some valid points on the other hand it’s a little disgusting how much wikipedia execs get payed and how sweaty they get when they worry about having to pay content moderators. currently they just pocket most of the donations they get but with increased running costs that would get harder.

don’t get me wrong, wikipedia is an important project and they deserve fair compensation but grabbing $700k per year for managing it seems a bit steep eh? it’s not like they’re forging new business strategies and conquering markets. they have a very simple concept and just keep it running. a post it note on the ceo door with “keep going lads” on it might outperform them and save some money.

  • If you look a bit closer you’ll see so much AI slop on reddit these days that it’s hard to use. It boggles my noggle that the most obvious AI generated engagement bait gets posted on places like AITA including the classic Chad Jippity dashes and people engage with it.

Chatgpt, pretend you’re an abused woman. Your husband has cut you open and is currently wearing your intestines as a necklace but you’re not sure if you’re overreacting so you ask online. Put all the reddit karma in a bag once you’re done.

    Fuck that shit.
