  • Our household cut almost all of our paid streaming subscriptions (kept 1 niche service so I can watch pro paintball). Mostly due to the time sink, but the perpetual price increases, mind numbing ads, and fracturing of services cemented it.

Besides freeing up time for other things, we’ve been going to our local library more now. In addition to physical media, a lot of libraries will let you stream movies, music, and audiobooks via free services like Kanopy and Hoopla.

I share the author’s sentiments. Would rather people read my posts and form their own opinions, than offload their thinking to a machine (while consuming energy and water to do so). And the idea that my posts would be scraped and used to train an LLM against my wishes makes me a lot less motivated to publish personal blogs.

Are you planning to air dry it? I believe the rule of thumb is 1 year per inch of thickness so you may have to wait a few extra years to get down to a reasonable moisture level unless you have access to a kiln or can build a solar kiln.

Other than that, I’m guessing it’ll be tough feeding it through a jointer or planer, so you’re probably better off using hand tools to flatten and true it. Chris Schwartz made a Roubo that way using 2 slabs of cherry.

Sounds like it’ll be a great bench in the end though. Best of luck
