  • It is often said that the months September through December got bumped back two positions when July and August were added into the calendar in honor of Julius Caesar and Augustus, but that is not correct. Those two months had been there long before those two men needed to be honored, but originally, July was called quintilis (‘fifth month’) and August was called sextilis (‘sixth month’). So they were always in the calendar, and named for numbers just like later months, but were later renamed for Caesar and Augustus.

    TL;DR: january and february weren’t really accounted for and were a “dead zone”, but later someone (might be Numa, but it’s not 100% sure) changed that and the offset was introduced.
