I just got my first post secondary at mid-40’s, and lucked into a very sweet job… Hell of a gamble but it did pay off for me. Still, I’m now the junior employee in a tight field and back to the bottom of the pay scale. I might be regretting it in a few years. Flip side, I ran in to some of my old co-workers recently… They are universally eyeing the exit.
Hi! I’m in my 40’s. My dad is ten years passed, and my oldest brother died in a total freak accident. Before I was born. One of the last things my Dad said was “I’ll say hi to your brother for you.” My brother died right before Thanksgiving. We never celebrated Thanksgiving, not for my whole life. My mom still gets weepy at Thanksgiving almost 50 years later. This was an accidental death. I don’t think my parents would have survived a suicide. I had a co-worker at my last job, hadn’t seen him in maybe five years, we never hung out, random texts every now and then, not a part of my life. He just killed himself in November. I have spent the last month asking myself if I could have done something, if I had only known…
Suicide affects people you don’t even know! Hell, I found my co-worker irritating and immature, but I sincerely wish he had called or said something, I would never wish that level of despair on someone.

It finally arrived!
For me, the most noticeable gain was in Monster Hunter World, but it was what I ran the tests on. I also played a lot of Earth Defense Force 5 and Genshin Impact. GI was always finnicky to get running. MHW did take longer to launch, and the new Monster Hunter Wild takes obnoxiously long to launch on first run after an update.
I’ve been gaming almost exclusively in Linux since roughly start of COVID. It’s come a long way. I am this close to VR on Fedora, but it’s still not quite working.
I have a Ryzen CPU with onboard graphics and then an Nvidia 3060ti mobile. Rpmfusion drivers in Linux and Nvidia experience in Windows.
Gaming on Linux is superior, on a lot of games! I dual booted and ran benchmarks on Windows 11 and Fedora, same hardware. Ran nothing but the OS and Steam in the background, (gaming mode on and off), oddly found better performance with gaming mode off, then tried the same thing with Fedora. 5-10% higher framerates in Fedora running Proton.
Tried the same thing with synched Firefox tabs, half a dozen open tabs, telegram and discord running. Fedora sometimes hit 15% higher framerates.
I use phones without Sims, but it’s because I’m cheap and I have a collection of weird phones.
I already have an e-ink second screen that sits on the back of an iPhone… 4? 5? It’s collecting dust in a drawer, but I swear this is a recycle of an old project. It’s already been done!
Also, I have an old Yotaphone.
I run substreamer and tailscale to access my home navidrome. Works like a charm.

I have a docker compose immich that I somehow managed to kill fourteen minutes after convincing my wife to switch to it.
My older sister best the snot it of me… And anyone else who picked on me. I no longer speak at her.
Calgary Shawarma. I don’t know his name, but my grandfather was sick and I was stuck at work (working on a phone line repair at the auto shop next door.) Dead of winter, miserable cold. Then my mom calls: Grandpa died. Shawarma guy overheard this, I’m sitting in my van crying. Knock on my window. Guy hands me a Shawarma. “Boss, you should come in to my shop, have some food, get warm. No charge.” He sat and listened to my grandpa stories until I had it together and could go back to finish my job.
Seriously, total stranger, and he was there for me on one of my worst days, and I’ll never forget.
Ah hah! I went to write “Fedora”, and someone beat me to the punch! I find that you’ll get a lot of Bazzite, Silverblue, KDE Neon, Pop OS recommends, but I find that Mint and Fedor tend to work without too much fussing. I sometimes need to get rpmfusion or flathub stuff for Fedora to be 100% for me, but it really works quite wonderful after that. Mint is funny, because it’s the one everyone recommends for beginners, and, well, I keep coming back to it. It somehow manages to be more reliable than the Ubuntu base it’s built on.
