I am also self-taught. The best thing I ever did for my playing was just play a dead simple 4/4 with a strobe (light) metronome. I would lock on the kick/snare/hats for at least 30 minutes 4 nights a week. When the 30 minutes was up I would gradually add simple fills/ghosts etc.

It turns out there’s a lot of room in that basic 4/4. Like micro-moments that add swing.
