Even if Signal cannot access anything you share on it, it has major flaws for me:

• hosted in the USA on AWS, enemies of international laws
• is not decentralised
• a phone number must be linked to your account

If an attacker decrypts one of your message, they can decrypt all your messages if you don’t have Perfect Forward Secrecy so it’s very important. With PFS, if the attacker decrypts one message, only this one will be decrypted

IMO the best alternative is Signal:

• privacy and encryption are state of the art (link here)
• has all the core features you need (see the official blog) and less important ones like stories and polls
• I find the User Interface very pleasant and very simple
• You can simply add a contact just with a username, nobody can see your phone number if you don’t want to share it

For the drawbacks:

• centralized and hosted in the USA (Amazon’s AWS) unlike Session which uses TOR (AFAIK) and Threema (Switzerland law)
• you can’t host your own server like with SimpleX and Conversation, though you could use Molly but I have never tried it
• you will need a phone number to create an account unlike all the messenging apps I generally recommand but I trust them, they’re a non-profit foundation not a company

Why not try Pixelfed? It looks very much like Tumblr and Ins**gram. Any server you will use will have far more privacy than these spywares 😉

They say it’s secure but I don’t trust them. You can find several alternatives with much better privacy like Koofr (vaults are zero knowledge) and protondrive. Both are European 🙂

You can also use any service and encrypt all your data using dedicated tools for backup like Borg or specialised tools like Cryfs and synchronize your local files with Rclone 👌
