trilobite@lemmy.mlto Europe@lemmy.ml•The usage of Linux and Open Source (a study on the possible usage of Linux and Open Source on the PC within the Commission environment)1·10 days agoWhere are we 20 years later?
It used to be a breaze with linux, mozilla and AirVPN up till a few years ago. Now, it’s almost impossible to navigate the web, use public authority websites without having to disable VPN and all the privacy focused plugins of Mozilla. It makes you realise how invasive the internet has become. Even for people in this group that are above average aware of privacy risks, its just so hard. The internet would have to be redesigned by privacy conscious people but that will never happen as big tech would see their interests at risk and would strongly oppose. How do you get people to switch to Simple X Chat when I struggle to get them to use Signal.
Looks interesting but I couldn’t find anything on the android app. There isn’t any “Monica” on f-droid either.
Bangle.JS seems interesting and more capable than Watchy. But guess the latter’s battery lasts longer because of sink screen?

trilobite@lemmy.mlOPto Selfhosted•My first seccam, now the Frigate mystery in LXCEnglish1·3 months agoAh right. Docker seems to have gained more ground than LXC if its the first time I come across it. I hadn’t realised they were similar, especially after I discovered that people are running docker in LXC …
trilobite@lemmy.mlto Selfhosted•GitHub - sergi0g/cup: 🥤Docker container updates made easyEnglish1·3 months agoWhat i read here is concerning. Non that i was getting into the swing of drocker … :-( Is LXC the future then?
trilobite@lemmy.mlOPto Selfhosted•My first seccam, now the Frigate mystery in LXCEnglish1·3 months agoOk, I hadn’t realised that the helper script installs docker. I thought LXC was an alternative to docker.
Regarding the VM option, I did think of doing just that but read a lot about it using too many resources with frigate and LXC seems to be more efficient option when it comes to resources
trilobite@lemmy.mlOPto Selfhosted•My first seccam, now the Frigate mystery in LXCEnglish2·3 months agoOK, I should have been clearer. With “community LXC repository on github” I actually meant that I used the LXC scripts. It did go through a few questions at the start but nothing relating to storage and camera setup.
trilobite@lemmy.mlOPto Selfhosted•My first seccam, now the Frigate mystery in LXCEnglish1·3 months agoThat is brilliant. Thanks. I haven’t read this all yet looks like what I need.
trilobite@lemmy.mlto Selfhosted•What webapps do you selfhost that aren't media/game servers?English1·4 months agoImmich and Radicale definitely recommended. I’ve still got paperless-ng and plan to move to paperless-ngx as soon as I find the time. I’ve also got firefly-iii which is a big revolution to how I manage personal finance. Even my 17 old son has got into it … He couldn’t understand where all his hard earnings were going.

a) full VM via a QEMU VM that then has Frigate as app container (Frigate website is not recommending this approach from what I understand)
b) Virtual environment (VE) thgrough the “Proxmox Container Toolkit” where Frigate is as a system container (i.e. docker container directly in the Proxmox environment, which eliminates the VM overhead. See here: https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/pve-admin-guide.html#chapter_pct
Looks like someone has got it up and running in the PCT environment https://www.homeautomationguy.io/blog/running-frigate-on-proxmox
Also, I need to get my hands on a Micro desktop with a PCIe slot so that I can stick the Coral unit in it. Any thoughts for cheap solutions on eBay?
trilobite@lemmy.mlto Home Automation•Looking for a self-hosted alternative to the Canary (home security)English1·4 months agoI’m on the same wagon, trying to get a home surveilance system up and running. I too have settled on Frigate and probably Amcrest cameras (which models are recommended besides the one listed on Frigate website?). But a also want to install motion sensors in the house and door magnetic switches. Using openhab. What setup would you recommend in terms of hardware? And is there an Alarmo type setup in openhab?
trilobite@lemmy.mlOPto homeassistant•A good compromise between cost, integration and reliabilityEnglish1·4 months agoAh yes, thanks for raising. I had forgotten. So we have three Foss contenders:
- Frigate
- Motioneye
- Zoneminder
I’ve only tried ME about 6 years ago with RPi camera. It was alright but I’m sure things have moved on.
trilobite@lemmy.mlOPto homeassistant•A good compromise between cost, integration and reliabilityEnglish1·4 months agoThankyou for taking the time to explain. I was in fact going to get one Loryta cameras recomended by the Frigate website … If i can even find it in EU. Don’t want to pay the premium import taxes 😉
trilobite@lemmy.mlOPto homeassistant•A good compromise between cost, integration and reliabilityEnglish1·4 months agoAre you able to expand? What exactly did not impress you? Motioneye (which I briefly used 3-4 years ago with a dodge camera) and Frigate seem to be those that are used mostly as OOS solutions and hooked up to either OpenHab or HA.
trilobite@lemmy.mlOPto homeassistant•A good compromise between cost, integration and reliabilityEnglish2·4 months agoYip, I already have pfSense installed with an isolated virtual network just for my home automation.
As I’m thinking of getting HA to look after my IP cameras with Frigate, I’m thinking of a mini PC wiht a PCIe Coral device installed. Would this make sense and are there others doing this i.e. have HA on a miniPC with Cora PCIe installed and Frigate on top?
Interesting discussion going on here 🙂 sounds like this is pretty new and as I had suspected doesn’t seem to be well documented. If its just another Tuta, I wonder why they think they’ll be better at succeeding where others haven’t.
