People demand guard against me going crazy because why would they not. Would I still be benevolent if I refuse them the right even if they don’t bother protesting? And as a practical matter would it be possible to maintain the system without protests growing into a revolution?

From an outside perspective republicans seems like a bunch of one issue voters (pro gun, anti abortion, etc) coming together and voting against the democrats.

A political debate is intended to convince voters that your policies are the right decision. Not that they are correct in a factual sense.

They could measure themselves and just send the ones that meet the criteria for certification by someone else. Anyway it’s a funny tinfoil theory and they are probably all good quality.
Conspiracy theory: they have loose tolerances at the assembly line. They are all checked if they meet the certification criteria. The ones that do gets the paper and the stamp and the ones that don’t go in the other bin and are sold without a cert.

As for the developer if they are more famous for their political views than the software I’d probably not install it.

Short answer: hard to start a new company that can compete. Over the decades all the other companies have done poorly and gone bankrupt or been bought out.
