I tried subscribing to some communities, some work fine but some say “Subscribe pending” instead. What does that mean?

from my understanding that’s when the community is on another instance and your subscribe has to be federated, which can take a while
I agree I have this too on some communities…I’m thinking that there is an approval process or something
