Similar thing happened in the early 2000s to Darebin Creek. Major detergent spill from a factory bordering the creek. Turned everything plantish black and stinking for months. No major works done to mitigate it back then. Did eventually dissipate but was a nasty mess while it lasted. Many dead rodents & birds.

That takes me back. Read it many many years ago as a teenager. I think you’re right about sf being more tech based then. Still can’t beat Asimov’s robot trilogy for a close (if dated) look at human/tech interactions and the moral dimensions thereof.
Edit: also Alexei Panshin’s Rite of Passage - which can horrify but does a rip snorting good job of examining the morality of a closed society. Re-read this recently and it stands the test of time.

The phrase Kia Ora dates from WW1 I believe - it could well have been done in the early 1900s.
Slow roasted a chunk of deboned lamb shoulder for dins. Marinated in lemon & garlic and a bit of star anise (not much but it made a tasty difference from the usual). Even though I made a total pig of myself there are plenty of leftovers for tomorrow. I feel a real shepherd’s pie coming on.
Do not believe the ‘you don’t need to turn it’ for an instant. All compost goes better and faster if aerated thoroughly and regularly. The lickle worrums just loove their oxygen. Better moisture regulation too if aerated.

Maybe what you’re feeling is grief for the time spent on suboxone - grief for the wasted time. But taking it may well have been a higher priority at the time, and so should not be regretted in the overall scheme of things. Feel the grief, and move on. This takes courage, which you have in plenty.
EDIT: Like a broken leg: you go to hospital and a plaster cast is put on, then when the bone has healed the cast comes off and your leg is shrunken and muscle wasted, so you do physio to get back function in the leg. Then you can put away the crutches and walk forward freely. In this analogy, the cast was was suboxone, the grief is the physio. Eventually you’ll walk forward freely. The physio is not wasted - it’s a necessary step in healing.
Smoke/vape shops will have quite a selection, places like the Reject shop will have some at the cheaper end of the market. Pay attention to how the item is refueled - you want the kind where you can get the injector refills from Bunnings in the bbq section. Cos those lighters are only good if filled with fuel. And the cheap ones tend to leak which can be a problem and a fire hazard.
