It’s pronounced however the masses pronounce it. Language is fluid things evolve. If everyone says GIF, it’s GIF.

It is both. There is room in this world for two pronunciations of words.

Yeah, like you’re the first to tell me that.

Explanation: Around the turn of the millennium, I was trying to come up with a username to use on a particular site that had a shortish character count limit for usernames. My goal was something related to the fact that I would often be making my points in arguments with “holier-than-thou” types by taking what they were saying, and turning it on its head so the offensive stuff was directed back at them.

I also happened to learn shortly beforehand that many years ago “'ape” was somewhat commonly used as a verb to mean “imitate” or “copy.”

I’m sure you can figure the rest out.

Sorry, I meant no offense, but was instead trying perhaps too hard to make a funny. My sincerest apologies if it landed poorly. My only excuse is that I was up much later than usual, unable to sleep due to (trying to avoid) thinking about something I had to deal with today. Fortunately, it went much smoother than expected.

Once again, I apologize for being so crass.

Haha using some of the words above I did the same for a mate when we argued about it and constructed a deranged sentence. We eventually settled on it being a pointless argument since gi can make both sounds, forever dooming us to conflict. From the wiki:

In her coverage of Dow’s piece, Canadian linguist Gretchen McCulloch theorizes that since the hard and soft g in this context are used with near-equal frequency, when a person first encounters the word GIF, they make a guess akin to flipping a coin by comparing it to other words they have encountered in the past. Once they have a favorite one way or the other, the notion is solidified—leading McCulloch to comment that this “probably means we’ll be fighting the gif pronunciation war for generations to come”.

Giraffe, giardia, and gigolo are all of Italian origin. Giant is French.

Gif was created in the United States by an American and he had the arrogance to complain that everyone didn’t pronounce it his special way.

It boils down to his hubris that we even have the debate.

Never mind that when written out like that, the first word of the acronym tells you how to say it. Otherwise we’d be pronouncing that word like “giraffe-icks.”

I am 70% in agreement on that. It would be 100%, but someone once pointed out to me that SCUBA is pronounced differently than the words making up the acronym. It’s not “oonderwater.” Maybe we should say “Skuhbuh” instead of “scoobuh.” 🤣

The first one is “Pew! Pew!”, while the second only gets used when I’m thrown out for being too drunk & disorderly.

But the “U” is in the middle. Don’t acronyms tend to follow something like “the first letter is pronounced like the word it is based on, then the rest of it is pronounced in the way which sounds like the ‘coolest’ or ‘easiest to say’ word”?

            Acronyms have no rules.

RADAR is Radio Detection and Ranging.
            Where is the first A?

The rule is that if you can make it sound like a word from mostly starting letters you have an acronym and that word can be pronounced however. If you cant and just have to spell out it’s letters like CIA its an initialism.
